Therapy FAQs

Cognitive behavioural therapy focuses on helping people become “their own therapists.” Sessions include a variety of exercises designed to equip you with skills and coping mechanisms to alter the way you think and perceive situations.

The simple answer is yes! There is a huge evidence base of studies which confirm that CBT has been proven to successfully address a large array of mental health disorders and day to day difficulties. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT as a first choice for a large range of mental health issues.

It’s an effective alternative to medicine. For some people, medication simply doesn’t work for them. CBT offers another form of treatment using a completely different approach which can also give you higher levels of efficacy as the improvements will be down to your efforts.

Unlike counselling and other forms of therapy, the duration of treatment is quite short. CBT doesn’t tends to last for around 5 to 20 sessions, though occasional follow-up sessions can be useful.

Though the approach to CBT is structured, it’s also very flexible. The skills you’ll learn can help beyond your original reason for treatment. The skills CBT often emphasizes can also be transferred to other aspects of your life.

Your initial consultation is free of charge. We use this time for you to decide whether or not CBT is right for you. If you decide to proceed with CBT, a session with Head Calm Therapy is priced at £100 per session for an individual and £130 per session for couples. We offer discounted blocks of 6 sessions. 6 sessions is the minimum number of sessions recommended by the NHS for the best results.

You can see the full price breakdown on our pricing page.

Yes, CBT often leads to long-term results with studies identifying CBT as being more successful than medication with longer lasting effects, helping you to stay well in the future. Since the emphasis is on identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and building skills for everyday use, CBT’s positive effects can continue to work and be adapted by you for new situations – our aim is for you to become your own therapist going forwards, using the toolbox we have created.

The most common CBT techniques we practice include cognitive restructuring or reframing, guided discovery, exposure therapy, personal journaling and various activity-based behavioural activation. Scheduling a combination of these techniques for you to practice in-session and at home has proven beneficial to our clients.

CBT is an ever-evolving treatment of patients’ mental health problems. It requires active participation and teamwork to achieve success. We focus on building a one-to-one relationship with each client to provide a solid foundation to tackle problems together and achieve your goals.
